Do you have asthma? Or does someone you love have asthma? Tired of trying to control it with steroids and medication? Frustrated by the side effects of these medications?
There is an alternative!
According to a study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapy, chiropractic care can help. In this study 36 patients between the ages of 6 and 17 years with mild or moderate persistent asthma were randomly selected to receive spinal manipulative therapy (a chiropractic adjustment) or sham spinal manipulative therapy in addition to their standardized ongoing medical management. The patients were treated with twenty treatments over a 3-month period. At the end of that treatment period, the group that had the spinal manipulative therapy, showed a reduction in bronchodilator use by 20%. The quality of life reported by these patients was improved by 10% to 28%. Asthma severity rating showed a decrease of 39%. There was an overall improvement rating of 50% to 75%. These rating were all maintained at a one-year follow-up. (1)
Another study was done by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) in Australia at 16 treatment centers involving 420 patients to find out what effect spinal manipulative therapy had on depression, anxiety, general health, and immune function. The study found that only the group that had undergone spinal manipulative therapy displayed significant improvement in their asthma symptoms, depression, and anxiety scores. The study also showed a significant increase in IgA (immunoglobulin A, an immune increaser) and a decrease in cortisol (a hormone of immunosuppresser). IgA plays a very important part in helping ward off asthma attacks.
